Realism is such weird concept. In my Popular Film class, we watched and discussed two films directed by Stephen Soderbergh, Bubble and Haywire. Bubble is a hyper realistic film about a love triangle (which is super awkward because two of the characters are in their twenties and the third is an obese woman in her upper forties), shot in "real" locations, using people who had never acted and no scripts. Haywire is the perfect foil for this film, an espionage (damn I love that word) piece about spies shot in a host of beautiful exotic locations, with actors who never seem to tire, even after having the shit beat out of them in the most bizarre of ways.
(Isn't the Bubble post creepy? All of the characters work at a doll factory.)
While discussing the two films, my professor said something along the lines of "it is extremely difficult to amaze this generation visually anymore, because of all of the effects in the media that we are constantly bombarded with". This really really disturbed me, because honestly, I am still amazed by a lot of things that I see. I was run and saw a little elderly lady talking to a mailman, and a sunset, and a starry sky, and my boyfriend in a flannel (later an unbuttoned flannel ;)...) and realized that, even after nineteen years on this earth, I am still in almost constant awe of the world and the things that take place in it.
Here are ten things that still amaze me in no particular order:
Fresh fruit, how the hell is it so delicious and so healthy?
Anything by Banksy, he's so creative and fearless. If I had any street art skills, I would definitely find him and just listen to everything he says and hold his spray bottles in continual amazement. If you haven't seen his documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, I would highly recommend it. Flawless art and an unique take on street art.
How this person managed to make these leaves stick together. I saved this picture in my ever expanding random photo library because it never fails to leave (haha punny..) me thinking and wondering about those leaves.
This picture in general (I am actually in this one). This day was one of the best days of my life, and I cannot get over the fact that I have this awesome photo to prove it. The fact that a camera could capture that is so incredibly awesome. It's so perfect that it almost looks fake.
