Krewella and Fall Out Boy?

As most of you know, Fall Out Boy is my favorite band of all time (hence the blog title). Krewella, as many of you probably don't know (unless you are in my group of friends at college), is my friend, Erich's favorite EDM (electronic dance music) group.

They are collaborating.

We are both scared and excited. It could be crazy amazing, or just downright crazy. I guess we will just have to wait and see. This link is the teaser that was release (just a warning, the sound quality is awful).

Carry This Picture

Carry this picture for luck. Kept in a locket,
Tucked in your collar, close to your chest.
Make it a secret, shown to the closest friends.

And meet me at quarter to seven,
The sun will still shine then, at this time of year.
We'll head to the inlet. And we'll share a bottle there.

And color the coast with your smile
It's the most genuine thing I've ever seen.
I was so lost, but now, I believe.

And follor me south of the big docks, where they tether the boats,
And the rich men revere as so important, they hire our fathers to steer.

And down to the edge of the water,
Where we'll spill our guts,
And we'll name our fears. I'll give you this picture.
Kepp it and don't be scared.

And color the coast with your smile.
It's the most genuine thing I've ever seen.
I was so lost, but now, I believe in the coast,
Your smile is the most genuine thing I've ever seen.
I was so lost, but now, I believe

My Very Own MLIA (My Life is Average) Moment

For those of you who don't know, there is a website called My Life is Average where people submit short stories about 'average' things that have happened to them. For example:

Today, I went to Buffalo Wild Wings with some friends. We walked over to the jukebox and proceeded to put on "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats. As the song came on, while we were dancing, an employee comes up to us in a serious tone and asks who put the song on. My friend steps in front and says that he did it. The employee immeadeatly holds up his hand and gives my friend a Hi-5. New favorite resteraunt? I think so. MLIA

Deep down, I always wished for my own MLIA moment. Yesterday, that wish was granted.

Today in Queer Lit class, my friend and I put N'Sync's Digital Getdown music video/song on the projector before our professor came to class. Some annoying kid turned it down and said that the song was stupid. Halfway through the song, our professor walks in and asks why there is an N'Sync song playing. We tell him that we are trying to relive the 90's. In response, he puts on Say My Name by Destiny's Child, turning the volume back up to the top. MLIA

And just because I could never truly believe some of these stories, here is photographic proof.

8Tracks

I used to be a loyal Spotify and Pandora user. Between the two music sharing website-things, I was able to get my fix of songs that I already know, as well as some new ones that I have grown to love. However, Spotify keeps crashing on me for some reason which I cannot seem to figure out. This leaves me with no choice but to find an alternative.

8tracks. 8tracks is a weird combination of Spotify and Pandora, a place where users make and share playlists. When I click to listen to a playlist, I know the general genre, but not the exact songs. It also keeps playing whatever song you are listening to as you peruse the website, one of my favorite features.

Here are a few of my favorite 8tracks mixes.

Fall Out Boy Friday

Today is Fall Out Boy Friday, and Fall Out Boy has put their album out on the internet. It takes a few listens to fully absorb, but it is definitely worth it. Have an awesome weekend!

Andrew's Angst

Regardless of the genres of music you listen to, Jack's Mannequin is one of those bands that you just kind of have to love. Their song I'm Ready (off their album "Everything in Transit") is no exception. Especially because, about two-thirds of the way through the song, Andrew MacMahon stops singing and goes on this weirdly entertaining 'thing' (for lack of a better term).

(I wake up to find it's another
Four aspirin morning, and I dive in
I put on the same clothes I wore yesterday.
When did society decide that we had to change
And wash a tee shirt after every individual use:
If it's not dirty, I'm gonna wear it.
I take the stairs to the car
And there's fog on the windows.
(And I'm Fighting the words...)
I need caffeine in my blood stream,
I take caffeine in the blood stream.
I grip the wheel and all at once I realize:
(And you're getting away...)
My life has become a boring pop song
And everyone's singing along.)

Just in Case Anyone Missed This.

The video is super gruesome, but the song is weirdly kind of genius. In the words of Fall Out Boy themselves, "the songs you grow to like, never stick at first" (Dead on Arrival). I hated this song the first time around, but sans music video, I could not love it more.
Their angst and stress about the need to prove themselves to everyone who has been doubting them since From Under the Cork Tree while staying true to themselves and what they do best is highly evident, especially in this song. That struggle is something that a lot of people (myself definitely included) can relate to. And, since Fall Out Boy songs are always better once you see/know the lyrics, I have posted them below.

 Put on your war paint

You are a brick tied to me that’s dragging me down
Strike a match and I’ll burn you to the ground
We are the jack-o-lanterns in July
Setting fire to the sky
Here, here comes this rising tide
so come on

Put on your war paint

Cross walks and crossed hearts and hope-to-dies
Silver clouds with grey lining

So we can take the world back from the heart-attacked
One maniac at a time we will take it back
You know time crawls on when you’re waiting for the song to start
So dance alone to the beat of your heart

Hey, young blood, doesn’t it feel like our time is running out
I’m going to change you like a remix
Then I’ll raise you like a phoenix
Wearing all-vintage misery
No, I think it looked a little better on me

I’m going to change you like a remix
Then I’ll raise you like a phoenix

Bring home the boys in scraps
Scrap metal the tanks
Get hitched make a career out of robbing banks
Because the world is just a teller and we are wearing black masks
"You broke our spirits," says the note we pass

So we can take the world back from the heart-attacked
One maniac at a time we will take it back
You know time crawls on when you’re waiting for the song to start
So dance alone to the beat of your heart

Hey, young blood, doesn’t it feel like our time is running out
I’m going to change you like a remix
Then I’ll raise you like a phoenix
Wearing all-vintage misery
No, I think it looked a little better on me
I’m going to change you like a remix
Then I’ll raise you like a phoenix

Put on your war paint

The war is won before it’s begun
Release the doves
Surrender love
X4

Hey, young blood, doesn’t it feel
Like our time is running out
I’m going to change you like a remix
Then I’ll raise you like a phoenix
Wearing all-vintage misery
No, I think it looked a little better on me
I’m going to change you like a remix
Then I’ll raise you like a phoenix

Hey, young blood, doesn’t it feel
Like our time is running out
I’m going to change you like a remix
Then I’ll raise you like a phoenix

Put on your war paint

My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark

Many critics are complaining that Fall Out Boy's new song My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark sounds to mainstream. And it totally is, not gonna lie. However, there are a few defenses for it:
  • Patrick Stump has more creative influence in the band, which is annoying but necessary I guess.
  • They needed to make the hit song sound more mainstream in order to make it suitable for the radio (hopefully the rest of the album is less single-y)
  • They are changing as a band, and this song is the result of that change.
However, when you strip everything away (including their awkwardly awkward collaboration (?) with 2 Chainz that I have yet to understand), you are left with Pete's words, which are still as beautiful and haunting as ever.

Be careful making wishes in the dark dark
Can't be sure when they've hit their mark, mark
And besides in the mean, mean time
I'm just dreaming of tearing you apart

I'm in the de-details with the devil
So now the world can never get me on my level
I just got to get you out of the cage
I'm a young lover's rage
Gonna need a spark to ignite

My songs know what you did in the dark

So light 'em up up up
Light 'em up up up
Light 'em up up up
I'm on fire

So light 'em up up up
Light 'em up up up
Light 'em up up up
I'm on fire

In the dark dark
In the dark dark

All the writers keep writing what they write, write
Somewhere another pretty vein just died
I've got the scars from tomorrow and
I wish you could see, see
That you’re the antidote to everything except for me, me

A constellation of tears on your lashes
Burn everything you love, then burn the ashes
In the end everything collides
My childhood spat back out the monster that you see

My songs know what you did in the dark

Refrain

My songs know what you did in the dark

Refrain

My Soundtrack

My previous post  about Sleeping With Sirens' new album/EP If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack made me think. If I had a soundtrack, what on earth would it be?

Sadly, this would definitely be the first track, due to my inability to stay away from the boys that I have dumped, and their inability to stay dumped . I always end up re-dating them at least once, with the reason for the break up rarely being acknowledged, and the re-date attempts always failing.

Dev. I always seem to have this weird craving for her songs, especially when it's after 6:30pm on a weekend. This song is amazing to dance to. Plus, who doesn't like their beats fast and their bass down low?

When I watched the sunrise this morning with my newish  friend Henry(I saw him around campus before, but a random twist of fate brought him, Matt, and I together for a crazy adventure/all-nighter), we talked about sun songs and happy songs. He brought this gem to my attention, and I kind of love it a lot.

Because sometimes life is just so crazy and my thoughts just overflow and everything becomes complicated until I can't comprehend it all. That is this song (sorry in advance, I couldn't find a better video).

If my life were a movie, this song would definitely be included in the soundtrack, even though it's not really a soundtrack-ish song (but none of these really are, so...yeah). So so so fitting. I looked for a quote, but there are just far too many. I'd have to tell you the entire song, and that would spoil it.

What would your soundtrack be?

If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack

Admittedly, Sleeping With Sirens' fan base is mainly made up of fan girls. And admittedly, pretty much every single member of this band is super attractive (see above photo). It's not their fault they are all so crazy good looking.

I avoided listening to them mainly for that reason. They are one of those bands that I kind of hate to say that I like because they ruin any "credibility" I have in the music taste department (judge if you want to, but I can guarantee that you have bands/artists like that too). However, when the acoustic version of "If I'm James Dean, You're Audrey Hepburn" came onto my Pandora, I fell in love. First of all, the title of this album/EP (If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack) is one of the more original album titles I have seen in a long time. There are also only five songs on it, which is perfect for my short attention span. And, they are all super beautiful. Kellin Quinn has an outstandingly gorgeous voice. It can be a little cheesy at times, I admit. However, Sleeping Sirens magically (because they have no clue who I am) understand that I am super stressed waiting for all of my job-things to pan out, and have decided to make this beautiful CD in order to help me stay calm.
If that didn't convince you to click on the Youtube link above, maybe these quotes (from Warped Tour's band page) concerning If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack will convince you. Here is a link to the article if you'd like to take a look.

“When I started dating my fiancée, we spent all our time watching movies at home, hanging out at the house. We’re both fans of movies and the cinematic portion of life,” remembers Quinn. “I made her a mixed CD a long time ago called If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack. I just thought it would be a cool name for an actual album. It’s got a little history.”

“It was the first time I’d been away from home for a while, the first experience of the band, I was just missing home, missing my fiancée and our life together, because you have to sacrifice a lot of time apart to be in a band and be a musician and be on the road,” Quinn reflects. “It’s a sacrifice because you’re doing good things for the people that want to come out and see you and love you, but you’re sacrificing the person you want to be with all the time. It was cool to rewrite that song acoustically, because I feel like it really shows the emotion that you can’t really capture with screaming. The real passion and longing comes through in the acoustic track.”

Thanks, Sleeping With Sirens. Your music is much appreciated.

Nails on a Chalkboard: Song Lyrics Edition

I don't know about you guys, but there are some song lyrics that bother me to no end. A lot of my friends don't really listen to songs for the lyrics, so there isn't really anyone around to understand my plight, however, maybe you have this problem? If so, you are not alone. Here a just a few lyrics that force me to cringe, change the station, or turn down the volume. I avoided rap (way too much material there), and tried to keep it to songs that I actually listen to on a regular basis).

Taylor Swift- All Too Well- I love Taylor, I really do. All of my friends make fun of me for this, but for some reason, I just can't stop listening. All Too Well is the one exception. This song is one of her better ones lyrically, and I used to love it, until I heard "We dance around the kitchen in the refrigerator light". Really Taylor, really? You couldn't turn on a real light? You had to use up a ridiculous amount of electricity in order to achieve you're so-called "romantic moment"? No. Maybe you should take a page from New Boyz, Taylor, "it's better with the lights out".

Falling in Reverse-Pick up the Phone- Oh Falling in Reverse. Oh this song. What isn't wrong with this song, that is the real question. Oh dear. It starts off politely enough, with Falling in Reverse telling his lover-person (LP) to respond to his attempts at communication. He also states that "I apologize about last night, I really did not mean to disrespect", which is very polite. I might have answered his calls at this point. Except for the fact that the song is longer than 15 seconds..

Once he starts talking about how "the end is near" and he's "the one that is holding the gun", it's definitely time for some police involvement, and it only declines from there. The second verse basically alludes to the Fall in Reverse beating up his LP in some sort of domestic dispute which sounds a little too Rihanna/Chris Brown for my taste. At least we can take comfort from the fact that his LP never answers any of his phones calls/messages, which we know from the ending, my personal favorite part. This song makes me super uncomfortable when I listen to it, and the fact that pictures of the lead singer (Ronnie) and his girlfriend are all over the Youtube video makes it so much worse. Have fun dating someone who writes about beating up his LP..

The Cab- I'll Run- So, once upon a time, there was this fun thing called feminism. Apparently that doesn't apply to this song. "I can see it in your eyes, you're scared, all these things they force you to do aren't fair, I'm here to chase away these tears...". Besides the non-existent poetic value of these words (they are one of those bands that gets by one their looks and smooth sound), they are assuming that this girl cannot fight her own battles, due to the fact that she is just oh-so frightened, and she needs Alex (all of the members of this band are named Alex at this point as far as I know) to put on his shiny armor, ride off on his horse, and battle for her honor. Bullshit. He even says "this is the fight I refuse to lose", as though "it" (whatever it is) is only his battle. Doesn't his mystery woman have any say? Apparently not.

Then we come to the refrain. First off, he says that he'll "run". So? I have dated multiple cross country runners (and also consider myself a cross country runner). Their running abilities have never affected me in the slightest. Where is he running to? Why does it matter? Is he trying to lose weight? Believe me guys, I've seen The Cab in concert, and none of them are even slightly overweight (see the picture below). In fact, some of them may or may not need to gain a few pounds for those of you who don't like lanky guys like I do. Running is definitely not a smart option for them (not that I don't believe in physical fitness, they may just want to try building muscle mass instead, as sexist as that sounds. They started it..).
Anyway, he then tells this girl that he's singing to that she's "scared and alone". Seriously? You wanted to date this girl, right Alexes? Silly, silly boys, no one wants to be told that they are alone. That is just mean. Plus, why is she scared? Oh and one of my personal 'favorite' lyrics "believe me, and don't think twice". No. No, The Cab, I will most definitely think twice. I question everything, from what I eat for lunch to when I will do my homework. Dating a misogynist would definitely cause me to question things.  My penultimate (any excuse to use that word is a good time) boyfriend cheated on me, and I have trust issues like you wouldn't believe.

And that, my friends, is my musical rant for the day.

What I Have Been Listening to Lately

"There is no good and bad when it comes to music taste. Unless you listen to Nickelback, then you just suck"- Everyone

Violin and dubstep make an oddly beautiful pairing, especially when I need lyric-less songs for homework.

"Take all that you have,
And turn it into something you were missing.
Somebody threw that brick, shattered all your plans."

"I still remember grandma Dixie's wake
I've never really known anybody to die before
Red, white and blue upon a birthday cake
My brother, he was born on the fourth of the July and that's all"

"And as the sun went down,
We ended up on the ground.
I heard the train shake the windows
You screamed over the sound."
Now every time that I look at myself
"I thought I told you
this world is not for you"

What Solitaire Teaches Me About Life

If you haven't figured it out by my other posts, I love learning lessons. Life lessons, school lessons (occasionally), lesson lessons. I learn lessons from the weirdest things. Today, that weird thing happens to be Solitaire.
Why Solitaire, you ask? Well, due to the fact that I really don't feel like undertaking the undertaking that is my communications homework (I have no clue why I took two communications classes this semester, not my cup of tea at all), playing endless rounds of Solitaire sounds like a fantastic way to procrastinate. Randomly, while playing yet another game, I wondered what the point of Solitaire was. Why play it at all? It's just a stupid game, a waste of time. That's when I thought about all of the deep and thought provoking life lessons I have learned from a simple card game (which is my excuse to continue to play it and avoid my homework).

It's confusing as hell, but you can always ask for hints- Sometimes, I just have no clue where to put that stupid four of spades. Thankfully, there is a handy dandy notebook hint button that is there for your use (on my computer, I just press H). Life is kinda like that too. There are times when I have no clue where to go or what to do, and just need to turn to a higher power/my parents and friends, in order to figure things out. No shame in hitting that H every once in a while, as long as you are prepared to return the favor . --Insert cove/rendition of Lean on Me here--.

You lose occasionally, but there is always a new game- You aren't hired for every job, every person that you like won't like you back, and sometimes there is this season called winter that makes me wish that hibernation was something that humans did regularly. If you had everything that you wanted, life would suck. Think of all of the unsuitable partners, jobs that you'd hate, and physical and metaphorical junk that overcrowd your life. Argh. I would be a marine-biologist-priest-writer with some of the skeeziest husbands ever, and own a feret, parrot, turtle, dolphin, dog, cat, and frog with tons of tattoos, dreadlocks, and always wear those skirts that go down to your ankles. Oh, and my room would be decked out in Harry Potter and Gilmore Girls. Basically, I would be the hippie/punk/weird female version of Sister Wives and live in PetsMart (I went through an animal phase when I was little). Scary. In the words of Brand New, "everything that I own, starts to pile up like bones, to make the walls of a prison". Scarier.
Plus, losing makes all of the wins that much better. My current win rate is 14%. You'd better believe that I cherish each and every one of those victories. (Yes I suck at Solitaire, and yes I have no life.) I am hired for maybe one out of every twenty jobs I apply for, which makes me appreciate the jobs that I have earned that much more. There is more than one match in a matchbox for a reason. The first one doesn't always create a flame. Maybe the second one does though, and then you have a fire.
On a random note, Jimmy Eat World's, The Middle, has been stuck in my head while I was writing this chunkster of a paragraph, so here it is for your listening entertainment.

Everything is better with music. Everything. Solitaire, washing the dishes, homework, riding a dolphin(although if you're riding a dolphin, I don't know if anything could make that better. Probably not). Even reading this post. If you aren't listening to music while you read this, I feel super bad for you. So bad, in fact, that I am giving you an additonal music video for your listening pleasure. I am debating on doing a purely music post at some point, so I am not going to name specific songs, but my Pandora has been loving life lately, and has been throwing down some amazing new songs and artists.

Solitaire is fun. Life is fun. You are fun.
