Taylor Swift- All Too Well- I love Taylor, I really do. All of my friends make fun of me for this, but for some reason, I just can't stop listening. All Too Well is the one exception. This song is one of her better ones lyrically, and I used to love it, until I heard "We dance around the kitchen in the refrigerator light". Really Taylor, really? You couldn't turn on a real light? You had to use up a ridiculous amount of electricity in order to achieve you're so-called "romantic moment"? No. Maybe you should take a page from New Boyz, Taylor, "it's better with the lights out".
Falling in Reverse-Pick up the Phone- Oh Falling in Reverse. Oh this song. What isn't wrong with this song, that is the real question. Oh dear. It starts off politely enough, with Falling in Reverse telling his lover-person (LP) to respond to his attempts at communication. He also states that "I apologize about last night, I really did not mean to disrespect", which is very polite. I might have answered his calls at this point. Except for the fact that the song is longer than 15 seconds..
Once he starts talking about how "the end is near" and he's "the one that is holding the gun", it's definitely time for some police involvement, and it only declines from there. The second verse basically alludes to the Fall in Reverse beating up his LP in some sort of domestic dispute which sounds a little too Rihanna/Chris Brown for my taste. At least we can take comfort from the fact that his LP never answers any of his phones calls/messages, which we know from the ending, my personal favorite part. This song makes me super uncomfortable when I listen to it, and the fact that pictures of the lead singer (Ronnie) and his girlfriend are all over the Youtube video makes it so much worse. Have fun dating someone who writes about beating up his LP..
The Cab- I'll Run- So, once upon a time, there was this fun thing called feminism. Apparently that doesn't apply to this song. "I can see it in your eyes, you're scared, all these things they force you to do aren't fair, I'm here to chase away these tears...". Besides the non-existent poetic value of these words (they are one of those bands that gets by one their looks and smooth sound), they are assuming that this girl cannot fight her own battles, due to the fact that she is just oh-so frightened, and she needs Alex (all of the members of this band are named Alex at this point as far as I know) to put on his shiny armor, ride off on his horse, and battle for her honor. Bullshit. He even says "this is the fight I refuse to lose", as though "it" (whatever it is) is only his battle. Doesn't his mystery woman have any say? Apparently not.
Then we come to the refrain. First off, he says that he'll "run". So? I have dated multiple cross country runners (and also consider myself a cross country runner). Their running abilities have never affected me in the slightest. Where is he running to? Why does it matter? Is he trying to lose weight? Believe me guys, I've seen The Cab in concert, and none of them are even slightly overweight (see the picture below). In fact, some of them may or may not need to gain a few pounds for those of you who don't like lanky guys like I do. Running is definitely not a smart option for them (not that I don't believe in physical fitness, they may just want to try building muscle mass instead, as sexist as that sounds. They started it..).
Anyway, he then tells this girl that he's singing to that she's "scared and alone". Seriously? You wanted to date this girl, right Alexes? Silly, silly boys, no one wants to be told that they are alone. That is just mean. Plus, why is she scared? Oh and one of my personal 'favorite' lyrics "believe me, and don't think twice". No. No, The Cab, I will most definitely think twice. I question everything, from what I eat for lunch to when I will do my homework. Dating a misogynist would definitely cause me to question things. My penultimate (any excuse to use that word is a good time) boyfriend cheated on me, and I have trust issues like you wouldn't believe.
And that, my friends, is my musical rant for the day.
